The Effectiveness of using Insect Clothes

The Effectiveness of using Insect Clothes -an evaluation based on our experiment in Lurang Test Garden- Insect clothe is the veil of nets that used to protect crops from insects and caterpillars. Therefore, it will be effective to protect vegetables from insects and caterpillars such as cabbage and cauliflowers.

 We have conducted an experiment to determine the effectiveness of using clothes in protecting the vegetables (cauliflowers and red cabbages) from insects and caterpillars. Cauliflower plots consists of three treatments whereby each plot with 2 replications (3x2 = 6 beds), plot CF 1.1.and CF 1.2 are without insect clothes and rain shelter; plot CF 2.1 and CF 2.2 using insect clothes; plot CF 3.1 and CF 3.2 using rain shelter. Red cabbage plots consist of three treatments too. Plot RC 1.1 and RC 1.2 are nothing (without insect clothes and shelter); plot 2.1 and 2.2 using insect clothes; plot 3.1 and 3.2 using rain shelter. We treat the entire plots by providing chicken manure and not sprayed with pesticides either chemical or organic. We planted cauliflowers on 17 April 2012. Based on our plots observation and general evaluation (June 25, 2012), we found significant differences between all treatments. Cauliflowers planted in plot CF 2.1 and CF 2.2 that protected by insect clothes are excellent, but plot CF 1.1, CF 1.2, CF 3.1 and CF 3.2 are very bad, the vegetables eaten by caterpillar and damage.

The intensity of damage because of caterpillar is approximately 80 percentages. It means that the harvest of vegetables were failure. We planted cauliflowers on 19 April 2012. The same results also occur in red cabbage plots. Red cabbages that protected by insect clothes was growing well and healthy, no caterpillar and insect ate the vegetables. But unfortunately, another red cabbage that planted out side of the insect clothes were growing bad and eaten by caterpillar. The intensity of damage because of caterpillar is approximately 70 percentages (planted in open area) and 40 percentages (planted in rain shelter area). Based on the result, we conclude that the insect clothes can protect crops very effective from insect and caterpillar.
